St Conan’s Kirk Update May 2020
The kirk remains closed during lockdown however a small number of repair and restoration projects which can be safely done during lockdown are progressing. The image above is of the rose window tracery being pre-assembled in the workshop. This painstaking work meant every piece of timber was hand-crafted. The glass restorer was able to provide templates of each individual pane of glass and the old (rotten beyond repair) frame was used for reference. We are still raising funds to be able to build the brass frame for the protective layer of clear glass and the costs to reinstate.
We also received a grant from Argyll and Bute Council of £2,500 towards the cost of the annual Christmas Tree festival. The current proposed dates are 4th/5th/6th December. We may need to adjust the format to achieve social distancing however last year over 60 trees and 2,500 visitors made it a very special event. If you would like to enter a tree please contact us for more info… it could maybe be the ideal lockdown project (Please note there are some criteria e.g. minimum height, battery power only, etc so contact us first!). Also see facebook and this website for examples of previous trees.
